While we prefer to post happier news, we wanted to brief you on Harav Lichtenstein who recently fell in shul. As a result of the fall, Rav Lichtenstein required back surgery this past Thursday, 23 Tevet, to relieve pressure on his spine, and is currently in the hospital in stable condition. The doctors are pleased with the results and hope to determine the recuperation process in the coming days. Please keep Rav Lichtenstein in mind during your tefillot for a refua sheleima, as this is a critical period for his recuperation. The Rosh Yeshiva’s name is Rav Aharon ben Bluma.

לכבוד בוגרי הישיבה, רבניה, תלמידיה, תומכיה ובני משפחותיהם!
בימים האחרונים, מני אשפוזו של אבא והניתוח שעבר בגבו ביום ה', אנו מוצפים בברכות, איחולי רפואה שלמה ובקשות לעדכונים מאת דורשי טובתו ושלומו של אבא.
האיחולים והבקשות מחממות את הלב ומעבירות תחושה של חיבוק חם ואוהד של תמיכה ושותפות. אנו מאד מודים על כך ורואים בזה את זכות אישיותו של אבא. מחוסר יכולת להודות לכל אחד באופן פרטי, אנא קבלו את תודותינו בשורות הללו והיו בטוחים שאנו מרגישים היטב את הדאגה הכנה ורגשי האהבה המבצבצים מתוך הבקשות הללו.
לאמיתו של דבר, אין הרבה במה לעדכן, אך אעשה כמיטב יכולתי. אבא נפל לפני שבוע בבית הכנסת וחטף חבטה עזה בגבו. לאחר שהוא התקשה בהליכה ועמידה, הוא אושפז בבית החולים (הדסה עין כרם) ואובחן שבר באחת מחוליות עמוד השדרה. השבר יצר לחץ על חוט השדרה והיה הכרח לנתח אותו על מנת לתקן את השבר ולשחרר את הלחץ מחוט השדרה. הניתוח נעשה ביום חמישי לעת ערב לשביעות רצונו של הרופא המנתח. אין צריך לומר שמדובר בניתוח מורכב ובטראומה משמעותית לגוף ונדרש זמן לייצב את הגוף ומערכותיו. מני שבת, מאז התייצב מצבו, אבא עבר למחלקה האורטופדית בהדסה עין-כרם ומטופל שם במסירות ע"י צוות המחלקה.
השלב הבא הוא השיקום והוא אמור להתחיל בו בימים אלו. לא ניתן עדיין לאמוד במדוייק את היקף הנזק וסיכויי השיקום. יש להניח שמדובר בתהליך ארוך וממושך אך מעבר לכך לא ידוע כרגע. אנו מתפללים לרופא חולים ונושאים עינינו למרומים שאבא יחזור לאיתנו באופן מלא. עם זאת, אנו בהחלט מודעים שייתכן וההחלמה תהיה חלקית, ואזי נשמח בחלקנו ונתמקד בעשייה ובטוב הקיים.
ברצוני לנצל הזדמנות זאת להודות לכל אנשי הצוות הרפואי – רופאים, אחיות, פיזיוטרפיסטים ואחרים – העושים עבודת קודש של גמילות חסדים ומטפלים באבא במסירות יחד עם שאר חולי ישראל. שמחה רבה היתה לגלות ביניהם רבים מבוגרי הישיבה שפנו לתחום הרפואי ומסייעים רבות בכל התחומים.
לשאלת רבים, טרם בשלו התנאים לביקור חולים אצל אבא. לכשיתאפשר הדבר, נשמח לבשר על כך לכל דורשי שלומו.

Dear Students, Alumni, Rabbis, Friends and their families,
In the last few days, following my father’s hospitalization and back surgery on Thursday, we have been inundated with good wishes for his full recovery and with requests for updated information from all those concerned with my father’s wellbeing.
These wishes and requests warm our hearts and provide us with a sense of heartfelt support and partnership. We are very grateful and attribute it to the regard for my father’s personality. Due to the inability to individually thank each well-wisher, please accept our thanks expressed in this letter and you can be certain that we profoundly sense the sincere concern and the feelings of affection that emerge from these requests.
The truth is, there is not much to report; however, I will do my best. My father fell a week ago in shul and suffered a powerful blow to his back. When he found it difficult to stand and walk, he was hospitalized in Hadassah Ein Karem, where he was diagnosed with a break in one of the vertebrae in his spine. The fracture caused pressure on the spine and it was necessary to operate on him to heal the fracture and ease the pressure. The surgery was performed on Thursday evening to the satisfaction of the surgeon. On Shabbat, when his condition stabilized, my father was moved to the hospital’s orthopedic ward where he is the recipient of devoted care by the staff.
The next stage is rehabilitation which is supposed to begin any day now. It is not yet possible to assess the extent of the damage and prognosis for recovery. Presumably, it will be a long drawn-out process; beyond that, we don’t know. We pray to the Healer of the Sick and raise our eyes to the Heavens that my father will enjoy a full recovery. At the same time, we are certainly aware of the possibility that the recovery may be partial, and if that is the case, we will be content with our lot and will focus on positive activity and appreciating the good that exists.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of the medical staff, the doctors, the nurses, the physical therapists and others, who are engaged in the holy endeavor of acts of kindness and are devotedly caring for my father, among the other sick people of Israel. It was a source of great joy to discover on the staff many medical professionals who are alumni of the Yeshiva and are providing assistance in so many areas.
In response to all of you who asked, it is too early to visit. When visits become possible, it will be our pleasure to inform all of you who pray for his wellbeing.
Please continue to pray for my father’s full recovery among the other sick people of Israel.
